January
Knight of the Month |
George
Zuban is our Knight of the Month. George is an ever-present
member of our kitchen team and a Brother with an unflagging commitment and
devotion to the Council. George is always ready to assist his Brothers
when called upon and has repeatedly demonstrated his willingness to
involve himself in constructive ways. He has been an active figure in the
success of our fraternal breakfast program. He regularly attends and
actively participates in Council and Bishop Ireton Center Board meetings.
His work in the kitchen has routinely had a multiplier effect on the
available kitchen staff through the support of his friend and Brother,
Mike Wannamaker (GK Rick Brennan)
January
Family of the Month
The family of the month is Bob and
Marty Prebish. These are special folks, a tandem quiet and
unobtrusive, but having a considerable impact on all we do as a Council.
Bob's commitment to the Order and its principles is manifest by his
immersion in the degree work of the Order. Over the years, he has mastered
many of the most difficult ceremonial roles and performed them with
professionalism, sincerity, and passion. He serves his Brothers whenever
called upon and in any capacity. As a Past Grand Knight and former district
deputy, he has brought abundant experience to our Council. His example is
one to emulate. Marty, at his side, always accessible, ever cheerful and
helpful, a vital member of the Ladies Auxiliary, is the perfect helpmate
complementing Bob's drive and commitment. (GK Rick Brennan)
Febru ary
Knight of the Month
Jim
Cooke is our Knight of the Month for February. Jim has been
a member of our Council for only a short period of time and has already
impressed our Brothers with his commitment to the principals of the Order,
his energy, and his intellect. He works on both a bingo team and a bingo
kitchen team, attends meetings regularly, and is always responsive when
asked to support a particular initiative. His skills are valued as we embark
on the integration of computer bingo into our Wednesday night program. Jim
is a quick study whose demonstrated potential for leadership enhances our
Council; we are fortunate to have him as a member of our Brotherhood. I am
confident in predicting that Jim will be among the Council leadership in the
future. (GK Rick Brennan) February
Family of the Month
John and Joan Quinn are our family of
the Month for February. John and Joan exemplify the model of the Catholic
family. They exude love, compassion, and a spirit of communion within the
Council and the Order. John has been a stalwart leader in our efforts to
sustain a vibrant admissions program and has been an invaluable advisor in
maintaining an ordered approach to recruitment, applicant screening, and
tracking degree schedules. His detailed planning and follow-through each
year in the preparations and conduct of the Light Up for Christ event in
December have consistently resulted in a moving and spiritual event. Joan
has been his alter ego in his Council efforts and maintains a consistently
loving, optimistic, and generous spirit in the face of those physical
challenges that confront her. We are blessed to have them among us. (GK Rick
Brennan)
March
Knight of the Month
Rich Mayer is our March Knight of the Month. Only those who
participate actively in the Councils bingo program see the very substantial
role that Rich plays in fulfilling our mission of Charity, the first
principal of the Order. As the manager of our bingo program, Rich works
tirelessly and selflessly to ensure that the program is profitable,
compliant with the laws, and operated fairly. Most recently, he orchestrated
a new change in direction through the introduction of hand-held computers,
an initiative that holds great promise in restoring the profit margins that
we had once enjoyed. The renewed vitality of that program is due largely to
his judgment and foresight. Few in the Council have played such a pivotal
role in realizing our mission objectives. (GK Rick Brennan)
March
Family of the Month
Jim and Merle Waldron are our March Family of the Month. Their devotion
to one another in this difficult time in their lives is bolstered by the
spiritual underpinnings of their Catholic Faith. By their example, they
inspire all of us to see more clearly the most important things in our
lives…the support of our spouses and families, commitment to our Church and
communities, and an unwavering love for our Savior. Their long term
commitment to the Council and the Order enriches us. Despite his personal
challenges, Jim has continued to discharge his role as a Council Trustee as
well as his circumstances and time will allow. Jim's extraordinary bio, his
intelligence and insights, his humor, and his innate decency define a very
full life, a model for us all. . (GK Rick Brennan)
April
Knight of the Month
Bob Martin
is our April Knight of the Month. In any organization, there is always
someone who is a “go to” guy whenever the chips are down and the
organization needs someone to help out. Bob is that guy for our Council.
He always pitches in to assist in breakfast preparations, bingo kitchens,
KOVAR, cleanup crews, and other jobs that garner little attention. He’s
been an usher at St Augustine’s for many years. Bob never thrusts himself
forward, calls attention to himself, or looks for credit but is a stolid
member of any Council working group and a great team player. He’s what
Brotherhood is all about; he lives the principles of the Order. (GK Rick Brennan)
April
Family of the Month
Bob and
Fran Kuzma
are our April
Family of the Month. Bob has become an important contributor to the Council
and its mission. Serving on a Wednesday bingo team, his computer skills
have contributed measurably to a more stable and reliable Lucky Seven and
handset configuration and issue process. This has proven critical in the
current transitional period in our bingo program. Bob, Fran, and their
children: Jessica, 13; Joseph, 12; Sara, 9; and Marcy, 8 all contribute
substantially to the mission of St Augustine’s parish and the broader
Catholic community through their example. Fran herself as a cantor and
member of the choir, VBS volunteer, LIFE participant, and assistance at
funerals; Jessica as a VBS volunteer; Joseph as an usher; and the entire
family as members of the STAR Choir and LIFE participants. Their commitment
to the parish is complete and reflective of their selflessness and devotion
to their Church. GK Rick Brennan)
May
Knight of the Month
Tony
Toler is our May Knight
of the Month. Few realize and recognize the great sacrifices and
contributions made to the Council and its mission by Tony over the years.
His good humor and even temperament are welcome components of his
participation in all Council activities. He never flaunts his spirituality
yet few among us have as abiding a Faith as does he. His commitment is
manifest in service to the BIC Board of Directors, his service as an officer
in the Council, his constant presence at bingo kitchens, and his willingness
to step forward whenever asked. He lives the principles and lessons of the
Order and is an example to us all. (GK Rick Brennan)
May
Family of the Month
This months
Family of the Month are the Reicherts.
Tom, Ann, Amy, Zack, and Victoria present an example of a Catholic family to
be emulated. All members of the Reichert family are selfless and energetic
in their commitment to St Augustine’s parish and the broader community. All
are involved with Caritas, vacation bible school, and LIFE. Tom is a
volunteer catechist and Ann is a member of the Women’s Guild and a skilled
seamstress whose talents were evident on the stage in the parish productions
of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Fiddler on the Roof in
which she and Tom played important roles. Amy attends James Madison
University where she is a freshman this year. Zach has recently been the
driving force behind the Rock Concert at the Maguire Veterans Hospital, a
special first-time event staged by his rock band for the Wounded Warriors in
appreciation for their sacrifices. We thank them all for their service to
others. (GK Rick Brennan)
June Knight of the Month
Andy Kushma is our
June Knight of the Month. Andy possesses special talents that repeatedly
make him a valuable member of the Council and the Bishop Ireton Center Board
of Directors. These same attributes have served St Augustine parish over
many years as his skills are regularly sought by the pastor and those
parishioners involved with building projects. Andy is thoughtful,
experienced, dedicated, and professional while possessing a refreshing
candor that enables him to work effectively in a team context. He is always
at the center of Council building projects while his judgment and foresight
are highly respected and brought routinely to bear on all facility
maintenance and renovation initiatives under consideration by the BIC Board.
He was, most recently, a valued participant and advisor to the wheelchair
ramp building project requested by Father Mike to serve a St Augustine
parishioner. (GK
Rick Brennan)
June
Family of the Month
Dave and Lynn Griner
are our June family of the month. There are not many families of whom it
can be said that they would qualify for that honor every month of the year.
The Griners are such a family. They may be found wherever there is Council
work being planned or underway. The bingo program, Outreach support, special
projects like the recent wheelchair ramp construction effort and assistance
to fellow members of the Council and the Ladies Auxiliary all are examples
of their dedication to service. Their greatest contributions, however, are
to the men and women in uniform where their unwavering devotion to these
valiant young people reveals the core of their Catholicity, patriotism, and
essential goodness. Their example is inspirational and is to be emulated by
us all (GK
Rick Brennan)
July Knight of the Month
Jack Hazlewood is our July Knight of the
Month. Jack has become one of our most committed and active Knights during
his brief tenure with the Council and the Order. Having recently taken his
Second and Third Degrees, within 24 hours he had initiated his application
for his Fourth Degree. He has volunteered and worked Sunday bingo kitchens,
begun work on Saturday catering teams, and most recently planned an
ambitious initiative in concert with the Ladies Auxiliary, to produce and
distribute scapular medals to hospitals, nursing homes, and deployed members
of the Armed Forces. Jack's energy, enthusiasm, and dedication to his Faith
are noteworthy and an example to all his Brother Knights. (GK Bob Prebish)
July
Family of the Month
Vic Sr and Clara
Agosto are our July Family of the Month. It was no accident that this couple
was the Council's Family of the Year for 2006-2007. They are ubiquitous
wherever Council work is to be done e.g. bingo kitchens, bingo floor teams,
fraternal events, picnics, Council Masses, Council and Auxiliary trips and
the list is endless. Vic may be found at all Council fraternal activities
where, working tirelessly, he regularly immerses himself completely in the
most physically-demanding jobs. He is literally a “working machine”. Clara,
as the immediate past-President of the Ladies Auxiliary, has been a lynchpin
and the go-to person on a host of initiatives over the past Fraternal Year.
Her leadership has been the greatest single factor in the success of the
Ladies Auxiliary which she has led so ably. Her unwavering commitment to
service as well as to both the Auxiliary and the Council has been a singular
factor in our performance as a community of Catholic women and men during
the Fraternal Year just past. We are blessed to have such men and women
among us. (GK Bob Prebish)
August
Knight of the Month
This brother can always be counted upon to be a presence at meetings and
most Council functions. He is a diligent worker, applying himself to
compile, edit and distribute the Ireton Informer. He also updates the
Council web site and is ever present to take the photographs that document
Council activities. An unsung hero, he is everyone's buddy. Congratulations,
George (Buddy) Cranford, our August Knight of the Month! (GK Bob Prebish)
August
Family of the Month
This family exemplifies the phrase
“…lest we forget.” With a son serving overseas in harm's way, they have
taken the point in reinforcing Council support of all deployed troops. They
have coordinated, collected and sent care packages to troops during the
summer and also for Christmas. They can be counted to show up at VA
functions to show appreciation of the service given by our wounded warriors.
David will help coordinate our “Light up for Christ” event later this year.
Lynn is active in the Lady's Auxiliary, aiding and assisting another
auxiliary member who was ill by arranging meals to be brought as well as
recruiting volunteers to do yard work. It is my privilege to recognize David
and Lynn Griner as August Family of the Month (GK Bob Prebish)
September
Knight of the Month
This Brother Knight is
one who exemplifies the can-do spirit typical of many of our members.
Although he is battling illness, he is willing to expend the effort to keep
our Bingo game afloat and can be found at the Center on most Wednesday
evenings. He is also our Council's director for pro-life activities.
Recently, he affirmed that one of the reasons he joined the Order was
because of our support of Pro-Life causes. Congratulations to Rich Mayer,
our Knight of the Month for September. (GK Bob Prebish)
September
Family of the Month
This couple is a mainstay at most Council
functions and can be found at most of our Wednesday Bingo games. They
volunteer for most any need, even at short notice. The missus of this family
supports our Lady's Auxiliary by serving as Treasurer. Most Councils would
do anything to have such eager supporters - we are very fortunate and
appreciative. Congratulations to Lynn and Bill Bergamini, our Family of the
month for September (GK Bob Prebish)
